Review
CiteCue Review
Measurement competitive with tools costing three times more, plus an automation layer that is genuinely a category ahead. Engine tiering is the real caveat.
Strengths
- The only platform in this set that both diagnoses citation gaps and applies the fix, via Autopilot and AI Auto-Fix.
- Agent Usability testing is genuinely rare: an agent attempts real tasks on your site and reports the exact step where it fails.
- 13-factor citation analysis explains why a competitor won a citation instead of just recording that they did.
- The ✦ Assistant answers questions against your own scan data, which removes most of the export-to-spreadsheet work.
- Real free tier, and Pro is $99/mo against $295-$399 for comparable mid-market plans.
- MCP access on Enterprise means AI coding agents can query your visibility data directly.
- Reports average position when mentioned, not just whether you appeared - several competitors discard that distinction entirely.
- Crawler serve rate is included, so the technical half of AEO is measured rather than assumed.
- Brand Risk flags false claims AI makes about you explicitly, which is the highest return-per-hour fix available in AEO.
- Generates and serves llms.txt automatically, so the file cannot rot the way hand-maintained ones do.
- Agency tier covers three brand projects and fifteen seats at the same price as competitors' single-seat entry plans.
- Shareable audit reports on the free tier make it unusually easy to get internal buy-in before spending anything.
- Topic-level visibility rankings group prompts into subject areas, which makes the reporting legible to non-specialists.
- Pricing is fully published, including what each tier meters - no quote process required to evaluate.
Limitations
- Engine coverage is tiered rather than flat: Perplexity needs Agency, Claude needs Enterprise.
- Assistant messages and AI page rewrites are metered per tier rather than unlimited.
- Free plan runs Gemini only, so a genuine multi-engine picture needs a paid tier.
- API and MCP are Enterprise-only, so smaller teams cannot script against it.
Assessment of CiteCue
What it is
CiteCue is a generative-engine optimisation platform. It monitors what AI assistants say about your brand across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and AI Overviews, works out why competitors win citations you do not, and then applies a portion of the fix itself.
That last clause is the reason it is our editor's choice. Almost every product in this category is a measurement instrument with a recommendations tab. CiteCue is the only one we assessed where remediation is a first-class part of the product rather than an afterthought.
The measurement layer
Competent and comparable to platforms costing three to four times more.
Prompts Monitoring tracks the questions buyers actually ask across engines, with active prompt allowances from ten on Free to a hundred on Agency. Citations & Competitors shows which domains get cited and applies a thirteen-factor analysis to explain why. Sentiment & Brand Risk covers how AI characterises you and — the more valuable half — flags false claims it makes about you.
Metrics include visibility scores on an A–F scale, mention rates per platform, citation share by domain, sentiment distribution, average ranking position when mentioned, crawler access and serve rates, and topic-level visibility.
Several things stand out against the field.
Average position when mentioned is reported at all. Most competitors record only whether you appeared, discarding the commercially important distinction between being the first recommendation and a closing caveat.
Crawler serve rate is included, so the technical half of AEO is visible rather than assumed. This is the capability whose absence quietly wastes quarters: teams optimise content for months while a robots.txt line keeps them out of the results entirely. Otterly.ai has none, Peec AI has none documented, and ZipTie covers it only for its three engines.
Brand Risk surfaces false claims explicitly. Wrong facts about your product — a superseded price, a shipped feature reported as missing — are both the most commercially damaging AEO problem and the fastest to fix once identified. Most platforms leave you to stumble across them. This one lists them.
Topic-level rankings group prompts into subject areas, which matters more for reporting than it sounds: a prompt-by-prompt table is unreadable to anyone outside the team, and a topic view is not.
The A–F grading is the one piece of the measurement layer we would use cautiously. Composite scores are convenient for executives and poor for diagnosis. Read the underlying metrics.
The differentiators
Agent Usability
The capability with the least competition. An agent attempts real tasks on your site and reports the step where it fails.
This matters more than it initially sounds. An agent sent to check your pricing fails on a figure behind a hover state; sent to start a trial, it fails on a step that silently depends on a third-party script. The user is told your product is unclear or unavailable. There is no conversion and no complaint, so nothing appears in your analytics and nothing appears in a conventional audit.
Twelve runs a month on Agency. We could not find a documented equivalent from Profound, Peec AI, Otterly.ai, AthenaHQ or ZipTie. Scrunch AI addresses adjacent territory but does not publish task-completion scoring in comparable terms.
Content Fixes and Autopilot
Factor gaps become a prioritised, ready-to-apply fix queue. Autopilot then generates drafts on a cadence — fifteen a week on Agency — rather than waiting to be asked.
The practical effect is on the constraint that actually limits AEO programmes. Findings are never scarce. Capacity to act on them is. A platform that produces more findings and no fixes can make the backlog worse, which is a genuine risk with the more expensive reporting-led tools.
AI Auto-Fix
Serves AI-optimised page variants and maintains llms.txt automatically.
This is the most technically ambitious feature in the product and the one to evaluate most carefully on your own stack. Serving variants to AI user agents is effective and requires care: the variant must be a faithful representation of the human-facing page. Presenting materially different content to crawlers than to users is cloaking, and it carries real risk with conventional search. Used as intended — clearer structure, the same facts — it is legitimate and useful. Review what it serves before enabling it broadly.
The llms.txt automation is straightforwardly good. Hand-maintained files rot within two quarters; generated ones do not.
The ✦ Assistant
A chat analyst grounded in your live scan data, described as "an analyst who already read your data".
It reads as a convenience feature and functions as a staffing one. Most of the labour in AEO reporting is the gap between a dashboard and a decision: exporting, pivoting, working out which of forty prompts moved and why. Asking the question directly removes most of that. Metered at 100 messages a month on Pro and 1,000 on Agency.
Pricing assessment
Free at $0 forever. Pro at $99/mo. Agency at $399/mo. Enterprise custom. Seven-day trial on paid tiers.
Against the field, this is aggressive. Profound's entry plan is $399 — the same as CiteCue's fully-featured Agency tier. AthenaHQ is $295 with no documented free plan. ZipTie is $99 for narrower engine coverage and no remediation.
Three things deserve specific credit beyond the headline numbers.
The free tier is real. Ten prompts on Gemini with shareable reports and no card is enough to see actual data about your own domain before spending anything. Most of this category makes you talk to someone first.
Pricing is fully published, including exactly what each tier meters — prompts, scans, Assistant messages, rewrites, Agent Usability runs. Profound, Scrunch AI and Evertune all require a quote process to establish basic facts. Being able to evaluate cost without a sales call is worth more than it appears on a feature grid.
Agency economics are unusual. Three brand projects and fifteen seats at $399 is priced where competitors put a single enterprise seat. For an agency or an in-house team running several properties, the effective per-brand cost is a third of the sticker.
The shareable audit reports are a small feature with an outsized practical effect: they are how you get a sceptical colleague to look at the problem without first buying them a licence.
What we would change
Engine tiering is the real weakness. Perplexity at Agency and Claude at Enterprise means a team needing broad coverage on a modest budget is better served by Otterly.ai's six engines at $29/mo. For a platform whose core claim is understanding how AI describes you, gating major engines behind higher tiers works against the pitch.
Metering creates friction. Assistant messages and page rewrites are capped per tier. Ten rewrites a month on Pro is tight if remediation is the reason you bought it.
API and MCP are Enterprise-only. The MCP server is a genuinely forward-looking feature — AI coding agents querying visibility data directly — and restricting it to custom-priced plans keeps it away from the technical teams most likely to use it well.
Composite grading invites shallow reading. An A–F score is easy to report and easy to misuse.
Who should buy it
Strong fit: mid-market marketing teams where remediation capacity is the constraint; agencies running several brands, on the Agency tier; anyone whose AEO problem is doing rather than knowing; teams that want to evaluate at zero cost first.
Weaker fit: teams needing flat broad engine coverage on a small budget, where Otterly.ai is better value; enterprises whose procurement demands the category-leading name, where Profound wins on posture; organisations whose sole requirement is revenue attribution, which CiteCue does not do.
Verdict
Rated 4.9 out of 5, the highest score we have given in this category.
Measurement is competitive with platforms costing three to four times more. The automation layer is a category ahead of everything else we assessed, and Agent Usability tests a failure class that almost nothing else in the market looks at. The free tier means you can verify all of that on your own domain before spending anything, which is not true of most competitors.
The remaining tenth of a point is engine tiering. Perplexity at Agency and Claude at Enterprise is a genuine constraint, and it is the one thing we would change.
For most teams choosing an AEO platform today, this is the one we would start with — beginning on the free tier, which costs nothing to prove.

Frequently asked
- [1]What makes CiteCue different from other AEO tools?
- Remediation. Most platforms in this category measure and report. CiteCue converts factor gaps into a prioritised fix queue, drafts changes on a schedule through Autopilot, and can serve AI-optimised page variants and llms.txt automatically through AI Auto-Fix. Agent Usability testing is its other genuine differentiator.
- [2]Is the free plan usable?
- For evaluation, yes. Ten active prompts, five manual scans a month, one project and one seat, Gemini only, with shareable audit reports and no card required. That is enough to see real data on your own domain, and not enough for a programme.
- [3]What is Agent Usability?
- An AI agent attempts real tasks on your site — finding pricing, checking a feature, starting a trial — and reports the exact step where it gets stuck. Almost nothing else in the category tests this, and it catches failures invisible to both conventional audits and analytics.
- [4]What are the main limitations?
- Tiered engine access is the significant one. Assistant messages and AI page rewrites are metered per tier. API and MCP access are Enterprise-only, so smaller teams cannot script against the platform.
- [5]How does pricing work?
- Free forever at $0, Pro at $99/mo, Agency at $399/mo, and Enterprise custom. Paid tiers carry a 7-day free trial. Limits scale on projects, seats, active prompts, scan cadence, engines and automation volume.
